How far is the nearest big city?

The nearest place of 10,000, 50,000, 100,000, 250,000, 500,000, and 1 million people, with straight-line miles and direction.

Short answer

Distance to "the nearest city" depends on how big a city you mean. From Pierre, South Dakota, the nearest place of 100,000+ people is Sioux Falls, SD, 189 miles ESE, and the nearest of 1 million+ is Chicago, 661 miles away.

Worked example: Pierre, South Dakota

Pierre is a state capital with a small population, which makes it a good test. Starting from its stored capital point, the tool checks all 10,255 places and keeps the closest one above each threshold:

  • 10,000+ people: Pierre, SD (population 13,788), 1.4 miles ENE
  • 50,000+ people: Rapid City, SD (population 79,894), 143.7 miles W
  • 100,000+ people: Sioux Falls, SD (population 209,289), 188.6 miles ESE
  • 250,000+ people: Omaha, NE (population 489,265), 305.4 miles SE
  • 500,000+ people: Denver, CO (population 729,019), 394.0 miles SW
  • 1,000,000+ people: Chicago, IL (population 2,721,308), 661.4 miles E

The distances grow quickly with size. That stair step is the shape the chart above draws for any point you enter.

How the nearest city is found

The tool holds a table of 10,255 incorporated places with a Census Vintage 2024 population of 1,000 or more, each placed at its 2024 Gazetteer internal point. For each threshold it filters to places at or above that size and measures the great-circle distance from your point to every one, keeping the shortest.

The direction is the initial compass bearing from you to that place, rounded to one of 16 points (N, NNE, NE and so on), from true north. If you are standing inside a qualifying city, the distance is to its internal point, which can be a few miles away in a large city.

Why several thresholds

"Nearest city" means different things to different people. A parent looking for a pediatric specialist, a traveler looking for an airport, and a business owner looking for customers each have a different size in mind. The tool reports every threshold at once so you can pick the row that matches your question.

The 1 million row counts people inside city limits, not metro areas. Few US cities pass that mark inside their own boundaries, so the distance can be large even in well-connected regions.

What this does not measure

Distances are straight lines. Mountain passes, water crossings, and sparse road networks can double the real trip. Population is for the incorporated place only, so a small suburb of a large metro counts as small, and census-designated places are absent because the subcounty estimates behind this table do not include them. Hawaii shows one place, Urban Honolulu, for the same reason.

For the towns farthest from any place of 10,000 or more, see the most remote towns ranking, which uses this same method across the country.

Reading the stair chart

Each bar is one population threshold, from 10,000 at the top to 1 million at the bottom, and its length is the straight-line distance to the nearest place of that size. The bars never get shorter as you move down, because a place of 250,000 also counts as a place of 100,000. When two rows name the same city, the nearest place of the smaller size is also big enough for the larger threshold.

A long jump between two rows is the useful signal. If the nearest 10,000 town is 20 miles away but the nearest 100,000 city is 200 miles away, regional services are much farther than local ones. Compare two addresses by running both and reading the rows side by side.

Questions people ask

Does this use metro area population?

No. It uses the Census Vintage 2024 estimate for each incorporated place, inside city limits.

Why is my own city listed with a distance of a few miles?

Each place is a single internal point. If you stand inside a qualifying city, the distance is to that point, which can be several miles away in a large city.

Is the distance by road?

No. It is a straight line on a sphere. Road distance is usually longer.

Does it work outside the United States?

It measures from any point, but the only cities it knows are US places of 1,000+ people.
