The range you can click through
The smallest population in the file belongs to Loving County, Texas, with 48 residents on 669 square miles. The largest is Los Angeles County, California, with 9,757,179. Clicking both shows how uneven counties are as units: they differ in population by a factor of about 203,275.
How to use it
- Zoom and pan the map to the area you want. Faint gray lines mark every county boundary.
- Click inside a county. Its outline turns orange and a card appears with the name, state, FIPS code, 2024 population, land area, and 2023 median household income.
- Click another county to replace the card, or search a place to jump there. The point is kept in the page address so the link reopens the same county.
- Press Clear to remove the outline and card.
Where each number comes from
Population is the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimate for July 1, 2024. Land area is from the 2024 Gazetteer and excludes water. Median household income is the 2023 Small Area Income and Poverty Estimate (SAIPE), a model-based figure the Census Bureau publishes for every county.
All of these are stored in one file that ships with the page, so clicking between counties is instant. The outlines come from the Census 2024 cartographic boundary file.
Ways to use the map
Zoom in and click along a state line to see how county sizes change from one state to the next. Western counties are often many times the size of eastern ones. Click through a metro area to find which county holds the central city and which hold the suburbs.
To color counties by your own values, paste FIPS codes and numbers into the county choropleth maker. To put two counties side by side, use compare two counties.
Known limits
Outlines come from the Census 2024 cartographic boundary file, simplified for the web, so clicks right on a county line can land on either side. Connecticut shows its 9 planning regions and Alaska its current boroughs and census areas, matching the population rows. Income is missing for Kalawao County, Hawaii, the one unit in the file with no SAIPE estimate, and the card says unavailable there.
Rankings of all counties by each measure are on the rankings page.
