Embed map
Generate OpenStreetMap or Google Maps iframe embed code.
Short answer
Paste the code into any HTML page. Neither embed needs an API key. OpenStreetMap embeds must keep the map's attribution visible.
What the embed code contains
For OpenStreetMap, the code points to the export embed page with a bounding box about 2 km across, centered on your place, and a marker at the exact point. The box is widened east-west by 1 / cos(latitude) so it looks square on screen at any latitude.
For Google Maps, the code asks for the point's coordinates at zoom level 15 with output=embed. Both iframes use loading="lazy", so the map does not load until a reader scrolls near it.
How to use it
- Search the place you want to show in Place to embed and pick it from the list.
- Choose OpenStreetMap or Google Maps.
- Click into the embed code box. The code is selected so you can copy it at once.
- Paste it into your page's HTML, or into a site builder's embed or custom HTML block. Check the preview under the box first; it is the same code running.
OpenStreetMap or Google Maps
OpenStreetMap's embed is built from open data and shows the standard OSM map style. Its data is under the Open Database License, which requires visible attribution. The embed includes the credit line, so leave it in place.
The Google Maps embed shows Google's map style, which many readers recognize, and lets them open the place in Google Maps. It needs no API key in this simple form, but it is subject to Google's terms, and Google can change how keyless embeds behave.
Size and layout
The code sets width to 100% and height to 360 pixels, which fits most article columns and shrinks on phones. Change the height number to suit your page. Keep a title attribute on the iframe: screen readers announce it so people know what the frame contains.
For a map with your own pins, labels, and colors, build it with the pin drop map or the map with legend tool and export the pins. An iframe embed shows one location only.
Privacy note
An embedded map loads from the map provider's servers, so the provider sees each visitor's request. If your site has a strict privacy policy, mention the embed there, or link to the map instead of embedding it. Nothing about the embed passes through Online Map Tools.
Questions people ask
Do I need an API key?
No. Both snippets work without a key.
Can I change the zoom?
For OpenStreetMap, widen or narrow the bbox numbers. For Google Maps, change the z value in the URL.
Can I remove the OpenStreetMap credit?
No. The license requires attribution to stay visible.
